No one really knew about the death of Hisao's parents or grandparents. In fact everyone thought that he still lived with his parents. Hisao was never told how his parents or grandparents died, but he figured that his grandparents passed away from old age. He always wondered what his life would be like if his parents were still alive. ON his father's birthday, he imagined going out to his favorite restaurant, like they did every year. On Mother's Day he planted new flowers outside, just like his mother used to do. He really wished he didn't live by himself.
He always wondered why the village officials never looked into his grandparent's death. He figured they didn't care, or had more important things to work on. Although he figured that not might be the case, he always asked himself in the back of his mind. Why is it that no one talks to him or even acknowledges that fact that he's alone? Was he really that boring? He had several interests, and knew that there had to be someone similar to him, but he never gained the courage to talk to a random classmate. They only true friend he had was Misaki.
Hisao always took school seriously, because he had nothing else to do besides study or read. He did have a small part time job, but because he was only 18, he didn't make much. Besides, Sokishu hasn't had much of an update in a while. It's a small, mountainous, forest-type village, making it seem that there was no way to the outside world.
And that was practically true, only on special occasions, like the fourth full moon, did people ever visit Sokishu. Many of the people had their entire family in the village as well. No one messed with the fact that it really needed to change for the better. As always, no one really cared about that except a few people, like Misaki and Hisao.
When they were little kids they even came up with a club, that only consisted of them, that discussed things like how Sokishu should get a candy store and have some of the construction workers from the nearby town build more roads around Sokishu. Of course, being little kids, they never imagined that things like that cost money and effort, so eventually the club disbanded and became a friendship.
Misaki was similar to Hisao. They were shy, studious, and lived alone. Misaki had an older sister, but she worked diligently to pay bills since their parents were out of the picture. They both were kind and courteous, and Misaki thought they could make a relationship out of it, but she figured she didn't want to ruin their relationship.
Every fourth full moon, Sokishu has an annual fireworks show, and a small festival. Women wear their best kimonos hoping to impress people with how dignified they looked. Men accompanying them were most likely business men. In Sokishu it wasn't rare to have an arranged marriage, even in these modern times.
In fact there's an old legend that the angel, Ria, herself blesses two couples on the last night of the fourth festival. Naturally, Misaki wanted to take Hisao to the festival, she never gained the courage to ask him, but she did this year.
AT SCHOOL:
"Umm, Hisao-san?" "Oh! Misaki-chan!  What's up?" Misaki doubted herself, but she gave it a try,"Wo-would you like to go to the festival with me?" "Sure!" Hisao smiled, and then said cautiously, "You don't have anything planned special Misaki-chan, do you?" Hisao was grinning, making Misaki blush. "Uh-no..." Then she giggled, causing Hisao to become suddenly nervous. What did he just get himself into? Misaki turned around back to her seat.
The teacher than sat in his seat, well the bell quietly rang. "Good morning class, ok so as most of you know, the fourth full moon festival is coming up. And I'm sure lots of you have plans, but they school is actually holding another educational trip two days before. Don't worry though, if you go you will make it back in time for the festival", he said cheery.  "Uh, sensei?" A brunette in the front of the classroom stood up, "Where is this 'educational trip' to?" She then sat back down. "Ah, good question, this year the school board decided to send our top students to a new museum a few villages over. I've heard it's quite prestigious."
Most of the students questioned why anyone would actually want to go, but yet again, the teacher said only the top students could go. Which was probably fun for the smart ones they thought. The teacher continued on about their previous history lesson when Misaki passes a note to Hisao. Inside it said, 'f we both get invited we should go together!' and at the bottom of the note there was a kawaii neko face, which symbolized that Misaki definitely wrote this.
Not wanting to get caught, he waited for the lesson to be over to reply. "Be sure not to be late after break! We're going to talk about the mysteries of the festival next!" the teacher said. Some people left the classroom, and others just stayed in their seats. "So, Misaki, if we both get invited I think we should go." "What do you mean, Hisao-san?" "Well, it would be really boring if either one of us got invited, and had no one to talk to right?" "Oh yeah! Jeez, Hisao-kun your always one step ahead of me!" she laughed.
Hisao couldn't help but notice that Misaki said "kun" instead of the usual "san". Something was up with Misaki, but he couldn't figure it out. Guys are so hopelessly-romantically challenged. With no exposure to girls, besides Misaki, he didn't really know what to think of the situation. He always thought of Misaki as a sister, not a well…girlfriend. Hisao wasn't really experienced with this, which really frustrated him. He like to know about everything he could possibly acquire, whether it was about the chemical equation of lactic acid or about how to talk to girls, he always thrived to know more, one thing Misaki loved about him.
After a rather seemingly short day, school was out. Making all of the students flustered about finding dates for the festival.  Everywhere you walked there was someone giving out a confession or a love letter, even the old teachers who probably haven't had a date in thirty years! Something weird was going on, but Hisao didn't really mind, He was just looking forward to spending time with Misaki. Of course, in a new light this time.
